Our American Girl Collection
American Girl was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland as a doll collection that would depict specific eras in American History. Each doll line would include clothing, accessories, and six core books showing what life was like for a girl during that time period. After the success of what would become known as the "Historical Girl" line and later be re-branded as the BeForever line, the collection would grow to include additional product lines such as "Truly Me" dolls (nameless and story-less dolls that could be purchased as contemporary friends with contemporary clothing and accessories), "Girl of the Year" dolls (a doll available for a limited period of time with a story depicting life in the contemporary world), "Bitty Baby" and "Bitty Twins" (dolls geared towards younger owners). In 1998, the American Girl product line became a part of Mattel.
